The 90/10 principle

Got this interesting article from here. very good to practice & applicable to any situation. I think I used this approach whenever I faced problem during my PhD :).
____________________________________________________________________________________
Have you heard of the 90/10 Principle. When I first received an email from my ex-colleague a few years back regarding this principle, it made pondered and at that moment everything pertaining to this principle which I've undergone started to make me realise how uncivilised we've been when reacting to situations.

For those who has never heard of the 90/10 Principle, read on further to discover it and for those who has read or heard of it, probably treat this post as a refresher or recap.

The author of The 90/10 Principle is Mr Stephen Covey. Discover the 90/10 Principle and it will at least change our life or at least, the way we react to situations.

What is this Principle?

Well it consists of 10% of life is made up of what happens to us. While 90% of life is decided by how we react......

What does this mean?

We really have NO control over the 10% of what happens to us.....

e.g. We can't stop....

the car from breaking down,

the plane will be arriving late, which will affect our whole schedule,
a driver may overtake us off in the traffic...., so on and so far.....

However, the other 90% is different, we can somehow or another determine the other 90%.

How?....

Well..... it's by controlling our reaction actually. Let us see the following scenario as an example....

We are having breakfast with our family. Our daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto our business shirt. We have no control over what has just happened. What happens next will be determined by how we react. We start to curse. We harshly scold our daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears.

After scolding her, we turn to our spouse and criticise for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. And then a short verbal battle follows. We storm in the bedroom to change a new clothing. Back to the main door and we find the daughter has been too busy crying to finish her breakfast and getting ready to school that she misses the bus. Our spouse must leave immediately for work, thus we have to rush to the car and drive the daughter to school. Because we are late, we drive 60km/hr in a 40km/hr speed limit zone. Obviously we'll get the traffic fine from traffic police on guard along the speed limit zone. After 15 mins delay, the daughter runs into the school without saying goodbye. Then to make things worsen, after arriving late at the office, we realise we left our important documents at home!!!!!

The day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. We look forward to coming home. When we arrive home, we find a small wedge in our relationship with our spouse and daughter.

Why?

Because of how we reacted in the morning.

Why did we have a bad day?
(A) Did the coffee cause it?
(B) Did our daughter cause it?
(C) Did the traffice police cause it?
(D) Did we cause it?

The answer is "D"

We had no control over what happened with the coffee. How we reacted in those 5 seconds is what that caused the bad day.

Here is what could have and should have happened.....

Coffee splashes over us. Our daughter is about to cry. We just gently say: "It's OK, dear, you just need to be more careful next time." Then we just change a new clothing, grab our things for work, and finally we see our child getting on the bus to school. She may even turns and waves goodbye to us. Then we arrive to office early and cheerfully greet the other staff.

Notice the difference?

Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different.

Why?

Because of how we reacted of course. Again the emphasis is we have no control over the 10% of what happens in our life but the other 90% was determined by our reaction.

There are some ways to apply the 90/10 Principle.

Scenario 1:
If someone says something negative about us, do not be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass. We do not have to let the negative comments affect us. React properly and it will not ruin our day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, or getting stressed out.

Scenario 2:
How do we react if someone cuts us off in the traffic? Do we lose our temper? Pound on the steering wheel? Do we curse? Do our blood pressure skyrocket? The answer my vougue-ers.... Who cares if they want to overtake us and make us arrive 10 seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin our life? Let it be....

Scenario 3:
Put your worrying aside and always stay happy. For instance you are told you lost your job (wow this is serious!!!). Now why lose sleep and get irritated? InsyaAllah, with God's will, it will work out. And use the worrying energy and time to find a new job instead.

Scenario 4:
The plane is late. It is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take our your frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on. Use your time to study, get to know other passengers maybe. Why do you need to stress out? It will just make things worse.

_________________________________________________________________________________
So friends.... now you know the 90/10 Principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results. You will lose nothing if you try it. The 90/10 Principle is incredible. You will see it by yourself!!!

Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and headaches. Thus we must understand and apply the 90/10 Principle to change our life. No harm trying and probably we can enjoy it. It will only takes willpower to give ourselves permission to make the experiences. Absolutely everything we do, give, say, or even think, it's like a Boomerang. It will come back to us.....

If we want to receive, we need to learn to give first.....,

Maybe we will end with our hands empty, but our heart will filled with love.....

And those who love life, have that feeling marked in their hearts.....

The Pastor's Ass

Received this story in email & really like it. Indeed...it is very true!!!
____________________________________________________________________________

The Pastor's Ass

The pastor entered his donkey in a race and it won.
The pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the race again, and it won again.

The local paper read:

PASTOR'S ASS OUT FRONT.

The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the pastor not to enter the donkey in another race.

The next day, the local paper headline read:

BISHOP SCRATCHES PASTOR'S ASS.

This was too much for the bishop, so he ordered the pastor to get rid of the donkey.

The pastor decided to give it to a nun in a nearby convent.

The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day:

NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN.

The bishop fainted.

He informed the nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey, so she sold it to a farmer for $10.

The next day the paper read:

NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10.

This was too much for the bishop, so he ordered the nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the plains where it could run wild.

The next day the headlines read:

NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE.
The bishop was buried the next day.

____________________________________________________________________________________

The moral of the story is . . . being concerned about public opinion can bring you much grief and misery . .. even shorten your life.

So be yourself and enjoy life.

Lesson 1: Geography of Palestin & Israel

We always heard about the war between Israel & palestine but honestly I don't really know the story behind it. I know my general knowledge is very shallow on this matter. Since the latest invasion by Israeli, my interest to know about the history have grown. For a start, let's look at both countries on the map.

Below is the middle east map. Notice how tiny Israel & Palestine are. You have to open ur eyes widely to see them on the map. Another thing...all are Muslim countries except Israel. It always make me wonder why Israel is so strong??? What make me wonder even more is why Mesir/Egypt doesn't allow all the helps to Palestines pass through their country???? anybody knows??

While browsing for information of both countries, I just found out that Israel was formed as a country in 1947. Before that???? I need to dig more information. Palestin was still a big country back then.

Below is the latest view of both countries. As can be seen, Palestine has really shrunk & Israeli has widen their areas. Hmmm. Yes.. we've heard about the war between these countries for so long & hope it will end, someday.

Well, there are still lots of things to learn the history about both country & I am trying to do it slowly. Step by step. In the same time, I will always pray that this war will end & save the Plaestinians from the Jews bad doing.

***NEW UPDATE****
I just received this map this morning & we could see clearer how Palestine is shrinking since then.

Food for thought.....

Kegagalan: Di mana kayu ukurnya?

“Hidup saya penuh kegagalan. Dari kecik sampai besar ada je masalah dalam buat benda-benda. Asyik-asyik tak kene je. Dah masuk U, keluar balik, masuk yang lain….Tengok orang lain berjaya, kadang-kadang iri hati juga, tapi apa nak buat, saya dan kegagalan dah macam adik-beradik”, kata seorang teman.

Saya terfikir. Oklah kegagalan.

Kita mudah. Dari sekolah dapat no. 5 ke atas. Masuk menengah straight A’s, masuk U dean’s list, dapat scholar, kerja dapat mudah. 5 digit pay. Naik pangkat. Kawin.Jadi bos. Pencen. Duit masuk. Jaga cucu.Mati. Owh begitu mudahnya.

Tanda aras

Saya selalu teringat, Allah sebut dalam surah al-Ankabut: “Apakah manusia mengira bahawa dibiarkan mengatakan bahawa kami beriman sedangkan mereka tidak diuji..?”Jelas sekali. Takat ukur kejayaan dan kegagalan. So, jangan mudah-mudah claim kata aku dah berjaya, sedangkan hidup anda laluannya sangatlah mudah.

Anda nampak?

I BELIEVE

C&P from here (luv her Eng. very2 much, besides this blog)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I Believe...
That just because two people argue,
It doesn't mean they don't love each other.
And just because they don't argue,
It doesn't mean they do love each other.

I Believe...
That we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

I Believe...
That no matter how good a friend is,
they're going to hurt you every once in a while
and you must forgive them for that.

I Believe...
That true friendship continues to grow,
even overThe longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I Believe...
That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I Believe...
That it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I Believe...
That you should always leave loved ones with loving words.
It may be the last time you see them.

I Believe...
That you can keep going long after you think you can't.

I Believe...
That we are responsible for what we do,
No matter how we feel.

I Believe...
That either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I Believe...
That heroes are the people who do what has to be done
When it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I Believe...
That money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I Believe...
That my best friend and I, can do anything,
or nothing and have the best time.

I Believe...
That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down,
will be the ones to help you get back up.

I Believe...
That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry,
but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I Believe...
That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had
and what you've learned from them
and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

I Believe...
That it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I Believe...
That no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief.

I Believe...
That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are,
but,
we are responsible for who we become.

I Believe...
That you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret.
It could change your life Forever.

I Believe...
Two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I Believe...
That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you.

I Believe...
That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you - you will find the strength to help.

I Believe...
That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

I Believe...
That the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

I Believe...
The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything.

Solat sunat duha...

For my reference....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Solat sunat Duha is good to ask Allah for His bounties and mercy: rezeki, good health and continuous good iman. It can be performed after the sun is high in the sky (after 8 am & before Zuhur prayer).

Solat sunah duha can be done from 2 to 12 rakaats, one salam for every 2 rakaats. The niat for the solat
"Sahaja aku solat sunat duha dua rakaat kerana Allah Ta'ala"

In the first rakaat, read surah Al-Fatihah, followed by either surah Al-Syamsi or Al-Kafirun. In the second rakaat, read surah Al-fatihah, followed by either surah Al-Duha or Al-Ikhlas. During the last sujud, read this do'a 3 times.

Upon finishing, read the following do'a:

Rules of happiness

Found this in someone's blog. It's really true ......
--------------------------------------------

Remember the six simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred
2. Free your mind from worries
3. Live simply
4. Give more
5. Expect less
6. Include God in all that you do

No one can go back and make a brand new start. Anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending. God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain. But He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way. Disappointments are like road bumps, they slow you down a bit but you enjoy the smooth road afterwards. Don't stay on the bumps too long. Move on!

When you feel down because you didn't get what you want, just sit tight and be happy, because God has thought of something better to give you. When something happens to you, good or bad, consider what it means. There's a purpose to life's events, to teach you how to laugh more or not to cry too hard.

You can't make someone love you, all you can do is be someone who can be loved, the rest is up to the person to realize your worth. It's better to lose your pride to the one you love, than to lose the one you love because of pride. We spend too much time looking for the right person to love or finding fault with those we already love, when instead we should be perfecting the love we give.

Never abandon an old friend, you will never find one who can take his or her place. Friendship is like a wine, it gets better as it grows!

Story about subsidy & oil....

I don't really know about the subsidy & all of those oil thing, but this article anyhow is really interesting. At least I know something. How true are they??? I don't know...

The Story About Subsidy

A man called Razak owns a farm which can produce 10 apples every day. He has 5 workers to operate the farm. Each of them eats 1 apple daily and it is enough to keep them operating the farm normally. The remaining 4 apples, the landlord sells them at RM10 each and he earns RM40. He uses the RM25 to improve the farm operation and facilities. He gives RM2.00 to each of his workers and he keeps the remaining RM5.00 as profit.. Day by day, the farm is well developed and all of the 5 workers are happy with the money they can save..

When Razak passed away and there is a new landlord, PokLeh comes to continue the farm operation. He says to the workers: "We need to improve the farm quality and redefine our way of thinking. From now on all of you only need to pay RM1.00 for each apple you eat. It is very cheap as the price is RM10 each outside the farm." The workers have no choice but to pay RM1.00 for the apple they eat daily. Their earning decrease from RM2.00 to RM1.00 per person. As usual, PokLeh sells the 4 apples and he gets RM40. He uses RM25 for farm improvement and pays RM10 to his 5 workers. He gets RM5.00 as profit. On top of that, he gets another RM5.00 from the apples that he sells to his workers. In total, he gets RM10 as profit every day. Soon, the apple price increases to RM20 each. The new landlord gets a higher profit as he gets RM80 for the 4 apples he sells daily.

Then, he decides to give the farming improvement contract to one of his close friend, Samy.. Samy says:"Apple cost naik, improvement cost also misti naik." So, the farm improvement cost increases from RM25 to RM50. In actual, the improvement only cost RM30. The remaining RM20, PokLeh and Samy share evenly among themselves. Let's calculate how much PokLeh gets daily: RM10 (from farm improvement cost) RM20 (Net profit by selling 4 apples: [Gross profit, RM80] ? [Improvement cost, RM50] ? [Wages RM10] = RM20) RM5 (from selling apples to his workers) In total, PokLeh gets RM35 daily compare to RM10 initially when he takes over the farm from Razak. His profit increases RM25 and the workers are still getting RM1.00 daily per person.

The greedy PokLeh does not want to stop there. One day, he says to his fellow workers:" You see ah, the current market price for one apple is RM20 and you are only paying RM1. See how lucky you are! I have to SUBSIDY RM19.00 for each of the apple you buy and total I need to SUBSIDY RM95.00. This will greatly burden the farm and we might get bankrupt if we continue like this. In order to avoid bankruptcy, I need to increase the apple price that you buy from RM1.00 to RM1.50 and I will bare the remaining RM18.50 per apple as my subsidy to you all. " So, greedy PokLeh adds RM2.50 to his current profit and the number becomes RM37.50.

After you have read the story, I am sure you have already understood the meaning of a 'SUBSIDY' given by the BN government. The RM95 subsidy was never existed in the first place and so was the RM52 billion fuel subsidy generously 'given' by the BN government..

Do you have migraine???

Another interesting email & might be useful in the future....

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Base on true story from others...... .....

Alhamdullillah. ....I'm an acute migraine sufferer to the extent ofvomitting and becoming imbalance. Every time it happens, I have to take antacid & synflex. Antacid is to line the stomach before taking synflex which is a stronger pain killer than panadol. This is to let you know the strength of synflex that so much so I have to take antacid prior to swallowing synflex. This worries me quite a bit as taking pain killers posed other health concerns later. I've tried many times to manage it without
swallowing synflex but it got worst. Hence, I'm resigned to probably take synflex for the rest of my life at that time!

Then, one day one of you have so kind heartedly emailed me the ways and hows to cure headache by one Singapore Ustazah (sorry can't remember the name of the sender as well as the Ustazah). The method includes reading this ayat. I've tried it and alhammdullillah, being a bad migraine sufferer, I'm amazed at the miraculous cure! However, you have to do it repeatedly. For once in my life, I did not need to take synflex ! You see, strangely about migraine sufferer, we can feel when the attacks are coming and when it starts to ebb away. So, friends, save this method onto your
handphone "Notes" or "To-do List" so that when you have a headache and with strong conviction, do the method, Insyaallah, it will work !

1. Read Al fateha (1 x )
2. Read Surah Al Ikhlas (3xs )
3. Read Surah Yassin ayat ke 58 " Sala mun Qaulan Minrabbirrahim" (3xs )
4. Read Selawat (3xs )

What I did was, I blew it on my palms and put my palms on my head for a while. After that, I repeat the whole process again. I hope by sharing this experience, we become more confident of ayat2 Allah.

Another sister has shared her experience below. Please read. This ayat is really powerful!

True story : my story .
My sister was staying with me some months ago. My sister was bleeding profusely akibat pendarahan dalaman (internal bleeding). I asked my niece to call and ask him what we should do? He said "baca ayat 58 dari surah Yassin dan niat sambil meniup kearah duburnya bagi menghentikan pendarahan tersebut".

So my niece pun buatlah. A few seconds later darah pun berhenti. Oh god, what a miracle, alhamdullilah, leganya. From that day onwards, itulah yang saya buat apabila ada orang yang perlu bantuan menghentikan pendarahan. Yakinlah dgn ayat2 Allah.

You walk the talk first

By: Marina Mahathir,
The Star (Wednesday June 18, 2008)

The Government wants us to change our lifestyles to cope with inflation. It is easier said than done since most people were having it difficult even before the hikes. The Government must first set an example by doing things it should have done long ago.

WITH the recent hike in fuel prices and the Government’s exhortations for us to change our lifestyles in order to cope, may I provide here some suggestions for the Government and those who work for it to “share our burden”.

1. Stop having meetings, especially out at resorts, far enough away to be able to claim transport allowances. Have online meetings instead or teleconferences. Use Skype or chat.

2. No need to order special pens, bags, T-shirts, notepads and other goodies for those same meetings.

3. No need to order kuih for mid-morning or teatime meetings in government offices, or nasi briyani lunches for those meetings that happen to end just at lunchtime.

4. Cancel all trips for government servants to conferences overseas unless they return with full reports of what they did there, who they met and what they learnt and how they mean to apply what they learnt at home. Ask them to do presentations to colleagues who did not get to go, on the most interesting and important papers that they read.

5. Scrutinise invoices for contracts to make sure they are truly reflective of what those projects or supplies cost.

6. Stop elaborate launches for government programmes. In particular, stop the buying of souvenirs, special batik shirts, corsages, bouquets and caps.

7. Make all civil servants and politicians travel economy class. That means really travelling at the back of the plane and not buying full fare economy class tickets that allow them to be upgraded to Business Class.

8. Stop having the full complement of police escorts to cut down on petrol costs. If they need to be somewhere by a certain time, start earlier like the rest of us. Wouldn’t be a bad thing for them to also experience a traffic jam.

9. Once a week (or more), have ministers use public transport so they know what everyone else has to suffer. This might provide them with the incentive to improve them.

10. Once a week, let ministers go to a market to buy food for their families with instructions to not spend more than RM100.

11. Get ministers to carpool. They might get more work done just by being able to talk to each other to see what can be coordinated between their ministries. For instance, the Ministers of Health and Women could discuss what to do about women’s health issues in the car on the way to work. Maybe have a secretary to travel in the front seat to take down notes on what was discussed. By the time they get to their offices, things can get implemented.

12. Once a month, get civil servants to work with one disadvantaged group in order to be better able to appreciate their problems. It could be blind people one month, hearing disabled people the next, orang asli the following month and people living with HIV/AIDS after that.

We could start buddy systems which pair one civil servant with one disadvantaged person and at the end of it, ask each pair to make recommendations on how to make life better for each other. This might get rid of the problem of desk jockeys, people who never stray very far from their desks yet make policies for people they know nothing about.

13. Have PA systems that shout out the name of the officers who have to serve people at government offices so that people get the services they came for and don’t have to keep coming back just because the officer was out having coffee.

No counter should be left unmanned for more than five minutes before the officer is paged to go back to their stations. This should cut down waiting time for the public and save them transport costs in having to keep returning just to get one thing done.

14. Government officers who lose people’s files should be fined and have their names publicised for being careless and causing inconvenience to the public. Instead of making the public travel to their offices several times to deal with their problems, they should travel to go see their client and deal with it right there and then.

And every officer who goes out of the office should be given a reasonable time to get his work done after which he is expected back in office so he doesn't waste time doing something else.

15. And newspapers should save paper by reporting real news rather than non-news that they carry, particularly nonsensical utterances by politicians.

As they say, we need to do this all together in order to make a difference. So if the Government and politicians make these lifestyle changes, I will do my part and change mine.
